BREAK-OUT SESSION INFORMATION AND FACILITATORS
1.1 What Is LwICT and Why Should You Find Out?
Introduction to the Literacy with Information and Communication Technology initiative.
Audience: New teachers or those new to LwICT.
Michelle Larose-Kuzenko is a Consultant with the Learning Support and Technology Unit. She has been supporting teachers throughout the province with the implementation of the Literacy with ICT (LwICT) Across the Curriculum initiative.
1.2 Infusing ICT in Early Years Math and Science curricula
How can technology be used to support teaching and student learning in early years math and science?
Audience: Early Years teachers
Sherry Perih is the Math and Science Early Years Consultant.
1.3 Middle Years – Contributing and Engaged
When the energy and enthusiasm of young adolescents is nurtured and channelled through ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) learning and action, students become excited and committed to becoming better learners and citizens of their classroom and community. Participants will explore and learn more about Manitoba’s “Digital We” Media Literacy site as a starting place to help motivate and inspire students to take action in their social justice learning.
Audience: Middle Years Teachers and all interested in student engagement
Val Noseworthy is the Middle Years Consultant. She has over thirty years teaching experience in the middle grades as a school team leader and a teacher in classroom, EAL, resource and special education. She values diversity in the classroom and honours the potential and power of all students and teachers in the learning process.
Rosalind Robb is a Consultant with the Learning Support and Technology Unit. She has experience working with children of all ages and has taught at the senior years level and in adult education. Her focus is LwICT.
1.4 Options for Senior Years
What are the course options for Senior Years ICT? How can Distance Learning courses and Web-based courses support the learning of students when face-to-face courses are not available?

Howard Griffith is the Web-based courses Consultant with the Learning Support and Technology Unit.
Donald Girouard is a Consultant with the Distance Learning Unit.
2.1 MAPLE
The Manitoba Professional Learning Environment – MAPLE is the online educational community sponsored by Manitoba Education to provide access to resources, professional learning services and opportunities for collaboration and interaction for educators in Manitoba. This session will be an introduction to the many features of the soon to be launched MAPLE platform.
Audience: All
John Evans is the Web Technologies Consultant. An educator who served as classroom teacher, technology leader and school leader, John is passionate about the infusion of technology in all areas of the curricula and as a means to support and provide quality professional learning opportunities for educators.
2.2 Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Texting, YouTube, NIng, Blogs, Social Bookmarking, etc.) in the classroom.
Is there a role for these modes of communicating and collaborating in Manitoba classrooms? A discussion of how teachers across the world are leveraging the power of social media to develop critical and creative thinking and ethical and responsible behaviour.
Audience: All
John Finch is a Consultant with the Learning Support and Technology Unit. He formerly taught in Sunrise School Division and was an ICT coordinator for Mountain View S.D. His area of interest is LwICT.
2.3 Literacy of Online Reading
Online reading comprehension is not the same as offline reading comprehension; additional practices, skills and strategies are required.
Audience: Middle and Senior Years teachers.
Shelley Warkentin is a Consultant in ELA and Literacy with the Instruction, Curriculum and Assessment Branch. Her area of special interest is Literacy across the curriculum. She taught grades 9-12 using an inquiry approach to teaching and learning. She is a past-president of the Manitoba Reading Association.
3.1 ePEARL: Electronic Portfolio for Evidence of Active Reflective Learning
This resource allows students to communicate their learning, reflect on it and collaborate with peers in a guided way with an online tool.

3.2 LwICT and Middle Years Engagement
Workshop participants will have “hands-on” experiences exploring the Middle Years Engagement WIKI while learning about the five key actions that engage and empower Middle Years learners.

3.3 LwICT – moving into Senior Years. What does LwICT look like in Senior Years?
Literacy with ICT has been implemented across K-8 classrooms over the past 4 years and now Senior Years teachers are also using the continuum to assess student literacy with ICT. We’ll examine the different approaches senior years teachers are taking in response to LwICT.
